About the event

The Game Changers Institute (GCI)

The Game Changers Institute (GCI) is an inclusive research, educational and advocacy platform that promotes plant-forward nutrition in order to help improve personal performance, advance public health, support social justice and protect the environment. We also serve as a science-based nexus for organizations, institutions, foundations and other stakeholders aligned with this mission.

Key Goals for This Project

  • Show the impact of partial and full dietary shifts Most tools only show static “all or nothing” comparisons. We want people to see what happens if they move 25%, 50%, or 75% toward plant-based diets - making the science both personal and actionable.

  • Scale individual choices to collective change Let users multiply results across groups - from 1 person to millions. This helps organizations, schools, sports teams, and even countries explore “what if we all shifted together?” scenarios.

  • Highlight the full spectrum of impacts Deliver clear outputs on greenhouse gases, land use, water use, eutrophication, and acidification, while adding often-missing layers: biodiversity outcomes, animal lives spared, and broader opportunities to rewild and draw down carbon.

  • Make abstract data relatable through visualization Use dynamic, scenario-based visuals that translate numbers into familiar comparisons: football fields for land, swimming pools for water, cars off the road for emissions, species icons for biodiversity.

  • Enable transparency and credibility Ground the calculator in Poore & Nemecek’s dataset, complemented by Clark et al., 2022 and work from Tim Searchinger, FAO, WWF, IPBES, and others. Provide clear references so users know the source and reliability of each metric.

  • Create a tool for individuals and institutions For individuals, the calculator reveals the real power of everyday choices - even if they don’t go 100% plant-based. For organizations, it offers a data-backed alternative to questionable carbon offsets, showing how dietary shifts can meet sustainability goals.

  • Bridge science and outreach at scale

The calculator will serve as a direct, interactive way for millions to engage with the data and see their potential impact in real time.

Key Metrics / KPIs

  • Engagement & Reach: Total users, sessions, and time spent exploring scenarios.

  • Scale of Use: Number of dietary shifts modeled (individual, group, organizational).

  • Behavioral Impact: % of users reporting intent or action to reduce animal-based foods.

  • Scientific Credibility: Transparent sourcing (Poore & Nemecek, FAO, WWF, IPBES) and endorsements from this.

  • Distribution Impact: Downloads, shares, and use by schools, NGOs, and companies.

Future Use and Impact

  • The visualisations will power the Food Impact Calculator, turning complex science into simple, relatable insights. They will be used by the general public, schools, teams, and community groups to model “what if” scenarios, and by organizations as a credible alternative to offsets in their sustainability plans.

  • Advocacy groups will use them to highlight biodiversity and animal welfare co-benefits, while researchers and policymakers can rely on them as transparent, data-backed tools. The aim is to inform personal choices, collective actions, and institutional strategies by showing the real-world impact of shifting diets.

Important dates

  • Start Date: 6 November

  • Deadline to Submit: 4 December

  • Format: Individual or team-based visualizations using any tools.

  • Audience: Open to all interested volunteers

Volunteers are invited to create the Eco Footprint Visualizer — an interactive, science-backed tool that shows the real-world impact of partial and full dietary shifts, turning individual and collective food choices into tangible pathways for health, sustainability, and environmental change.

  • Live volunteers showcase: 11 December

Available data

  • Base Datasource provided by Game Changers Institute

  • NOTE: As Base Datasource is quite complex, and to make it easier to visualise, we have created 2 solutions for you to get started - More information

Selection process for the volunteers showcase

  • The Game Changers Institute (GCI) will undertake the important task of selecting the top three volunteer projects to feature in the Eco Footprint Visualizer showcase.

  • This selection process will highlight the most innovative, impactful contributions while reflecting GCI’s mission to advance plant-forward nutrition for health, public good, and environmental sustainability.

Criteria for Selection

  • GCI will apply the following criteria to guide the selection of projects for this initiative. Priority will be given to projects that align closely with GCI’s mission and that demonstrate strong potential to drive meaningful dietary shifts at both individual and collective levels.

Support and collaboration

  • Join our Slack #project-collaboration channel to ask questions, exchange ideas, or collaborate with fellow volunteers.
